THE MAIN STAGES OF THE SUCCES PROJECT from October 2017 to December 2020.
Learn more about the SuCCeS Project timelineThe Communes of Saint-Paul de Vence and Ceresole d'Alba share a common historical heritage:
the Battle of Cerisole, when in 1544, François 1er prevailed against troops lead by Charles V.
Sharing this history, the two Communes have quite naturally joined forces over a cross-border, collaborative project called "SuCCeS", an acronym based on the idea of "following the pathways of the Battle of Ceresole to find new ways of enhancing cultural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism."
This project aims to link two sites of historical interest: Saint-Paul de Vence, which already enjoys a reputation as an international tourist destination and has considerable experience as such, and Ceresole d'Alba, which seeks to develop its own tourist activity.
The call for proposals under the INTERREG V ALCOTRA France-Italy (2014-2020) programme provides a valuable opportunity to complete a number of projects: the creation of an exhibition and Information Centre at Ceresole, the development of numerous heritage trails in both territories and, in particular, a historical discovery trail at the foot of the ramparts in Saint-Paul de Vence.
The value of such Franco-Italian cooperation is based on cultural exchanges and the sharing of know-how between the two communes, the active development of tourism and the mutual referral of clients from one site to the other, increasing the appreciation of a shared historical heritage.
The municipality of Saint-Paul de Vence is the lead partner of the SuCCeS project, which is funded as part of the ALCOTRA 2014-2020 Cooperation Programme and which meets the criteria of Axis III: the Attractiveness of the area – Specific Objective 3.1 – Natural & Cultural Heritage: increasing sustainable tourism in the ALCOTRA region.

The SuCCeS Project - Anticipated impact and results:
1/ Establishment of a wider cross-border tourist offering with communal promotion
To develop tourist satisfaction, a number of new and innovative tourist products with coherent, complementary and cross-border content can now be offered by both Communes: guided tours, a permanent exhibition, plus different communication and educational tools.
Networking and linking of the two historical sites: a bilingual guided tour on both sides of the border has been devised that is tailored to established tour routes and highlights the elements of shared history, to encourage tourists from one site to visit the other site.
The regional attractiveness and the tourist reach of both Communes increase through the promotion of the different tourist products and the simultaneous showcasing of the two sites.
2/ Enhanced appreciation of historical and cultural sites with tourist appeal
Works to establish a pathway at the foot of part of the ramparts and safeguarding the structure of the Western ramparts will create an accessible footpath for the public.
The creation of a landscaped pathway equipped with specific tourist and heritage signage: the Tourist Office will promote its new bilingual tours along the route to bring it to life and enhance the overall tourist experience.
New tourist facilities will be installed at Ceresole d’Alba: a cultural centre will be created in an old market hall, housing a new museum dedicated to the Battle of Ceresole so that tourists can discover more about the battle and the broader context of the Italian Wards.
Three footpaths, one in Saint-Paul de Vence and the other two in Ceresole, are interconnected through a common system of signage that positively enhances the appreciation of the relics and cultural sites of the two Communes’ shared history in a durable way.
