La Colle is born

The construction of Saint-Paul de Vence’s 16th century fortified enclosure meant that several dozen existing dwellings had to be demolished.

The houses were requisitioned and the owners had to find somewhere else to live, beyond the town’s new walls.

Some settled in the nearby countryside around La Colle on land that was either already theirs or was granted to them. La Colle became an independent borough in 1790.
