Plans for access by vehicle were discussed with the town Council on the 14th November 1884.
On the 15th February 1886, the Mayor informed the town Council about a project to create a carriageway on the north side, the estimated costs of which were 4,500 Francs.
This was approved on the 7th January 1889: a hole was bored through the left side of the Royal bastion and a 205-metre road was laid, up to the Saint-Paul courtine.
