The St Michael Chapel

This was built in the 16th century on the site of the former parish church. When the district of du Puy was originally inhabited, the church of St Michael not only had a religious role but also served as a meeting place for members of the community.

Since the 16th century, the chapel is dedicated to both St Michael and St George. Hence why the gate, restored in the 18th century, shows a dragon pierced by two swords.

Marc Chagall’s tomb is close to the cemetery entrance.

The artist, who said, “I am grateful to Destiny for leading me to the shores of the Mediterranean”, lived in Saint-Paul de Vence for 19 years.

On his 80th birthday, Marc Chagall opens the doors of “La Colline”, his home in Saint Paul.
